HISTORY The Folk Dance Ensemble "Teiksma" was founded in 1946 as a group of enthusiasts, supported by Riga Carriage Factory. They tried to show employees the traditions of Latvian folklore and to teach students ethnographic dances and their staging. Active participation in concerts and different dance festivals has improved the artistic quality of "Teiksma" performances year by year, thus contributing to the popularity of our group in Latvia. The Folk Dance Ensemble "Teiksma" is one of the oldest and for the moment also one of the best amateur dance groups in our country and it constantly takes care of Latvian folk dance traditions. In a course of years "Teiksma" has staged 14 programmes, containing more than 200 choreographic pieces, produced by many famous personalities in the dance world - Ingrīda Saulīte, Harijs Sūna, Uldis Šteins, Dailonis Rudovics, Jānis Ērglis and others. These programmes reflect the treasures of Latvian folklore and variety of dance genres - from cheerful and humorous pair dances to lyrical dance suites and music based choreographic performances. Bright, colourful and nationally original performances of "Teiksma" present varied and vivid pictures of dance art in Latvia. With Jānis Ērglis coming into the group as an artistic director
and choreographer, "Teiksma" will continue to be the place where new staging
and choreographic performances will be created. These dances will form the
bases of the repertoire of amateur dance groups and the next Dance Festival
of Latvia. At present the ensemble includes more than 50 dancers, majority of which are students. The potential of "Teiksma" shows that in one year the dancers can prepare even several new programmes of different genres and aimed towards different spectators. The ensemble "Teiksma" is full of creative potential and ready to invest serious work in finding, retaining and popularising the treasures of Latvian folklore in Latvia and behind its borders. |
